How to optimise your day for wellness?
Ayurveda’s daily routine.
Optimizing your day for wellness according to Ayurveda’s daily routine involves aligning your activities with the natural rhythms of the day and focusing on self-care. Here are some key steps to follow:
Wake Up Early: Ayurveda advocates waking up before sunrise, preferably during the Vata time of the day (approximately between 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.). This is considered the ideal time to start your day with a fresh and calm mind.
Brush Your Teeth and Scrape Your Tongue: Upon waking, gently scrape your tongue to remove toxins accumulated overnight. Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth as part of your oral hygiene routine.
Drink Warm Water: Start your day by drinking a glass of warm water to aid digestion, cleanse the system, and hydrate your body.
Practice Oil Pulling: Swish a tablespoon of warm sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for a few minutes, as a tradition known as oil pulling. This is believed to promote oral health and detoxification.
Engage in Self-Care Practices: Ayurveda emphasizes self-care routines, such as Abhyanga (self-massage with warm oil), to nourish the skin, improve circulation, and promote relaxation.
Meditate and Practice Pranayama: Set aside time for meditation and pranayama (breathing exercises) to calm the mind, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity. This can be done in the morning or at any time that works best for you.
Eat a Nourishing Breakfast: Consume a balanced and wholesome breakfast, emphasizing fresh fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, and protein to provide sustained energy throughout the day.
Follow a Regular Meal Schedule: Ayurveda suggests having meals at consistent times. Aim for a moderate lunch between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., and a light, early dinner around 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., allowing ample time for digestion before bedtime.
Synchronize Your Activities with Nature: Take breaks and spend time outdoors, connecting with nature. This can include walks in green spaces, gardening, or simply breathing in fresh air.
Establish a Regular Sleep Routine: Ayurveda recommends going to bed early, ideally between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., to align with the body’s natural sleep cycle. Create a calming bedtime routine that includes relaxation practices like reading, gentle stretching, or taking a warm bath.
These are general guidelines, and it’s important to adapt them to your individual needs and circumstances.
