Infertility in Ayurveda is viewed as "Vandhyatva," a condition arising from the imbalance of bodily doshas and impaired function of essential factors necessary for conception known as Garbha Sambhava Samagri. These factors include Ritu (fertile period), Kshetra (healthy reproductive organs), Ambu (nutritional fluid), and Beeja (sperm and ovum), and any disturbance in these can lead to infertility.
Ayurvedic Understanding of Infertility :
Dosha Imbalance: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas when aggravated or deficient disrupt the reproductive system functions, leading to issues like delayed ovulation, poor sperm quality, and unhealthy uterine environment.
Ama (Toxins): Presence of undigested metabolic wastes or toxins hinders the normal functioning of reproductive tissues and dhatus (body tissues), especially affecting Shukra Dhatu (reproductive tissue).
Mental and Emotional Factors: Stress, anxiety, and mental imbalances also play a critical role by disturbing dosha balance and hormonal regulation affecting fertility.
Ayurvedic Treatment Principles
Shodhana (Detoxification): Cleansing therapies like Virechana (purgation), Vamana (emesis), Basti (medicated enemas), and Panchakarma detoxify the body and remove ama (toxins).
Shamana (Pacification): Use of herbal formulations to balance doshas and improve the quality of reproductive tissues and hormonal health
Strengthening Shukra Dhatu: Specific Vajikarana (aphrodisiac and fertility-enhancing) therapies that enhance sperm and ovum quality.
Diet and Lifestyle: A sattvic, nutrient-rich diet supporting digestion (Agni) and mental calmness, regular exercise, yoga, and stress management.
Localized Therapies: Treatments like Uttara Basti (medicated enema through the reproductive tract) provide targeted support for female infertility.
Herbal Medicines Commonly Used
Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Kapikacchu, Musali, Bala, Vidarikanda, and Guduchi are frequently prescribed to nourish reproductive tissues, regulate hormones, and enhance fertility.
